Affordable Housing

What is affordable housing?
Housing that costs 30% or less of a household's before-tax income. About half of Toronto's renters spend above this amount.

Why is housing unaffordable for so many?
Housing is a complex issue and many factors contribute to housing unaffordability. Unfortunately, various levels of government have contributed to the problem by neglecting their responsibility to provide afforable housing to Canadians. In the past, provinces and municipalities worked with the Federal Government to build hundreds of thousands of homes for Canadian veterans after the Second World War, and continued to support affordable housing builds for decades afterwards.

In 1995, the Federal Government ended the program that matched funding with provinces on affordable housing builds, making it a provincial responsibility. In 2000, the Provincial Government of Ontario further moved that responsibility onto municipalities. Since then, the city of Toronto has been responsible for providing affordable housing in Davenport - and we haven't done enough.

Can we do anything about it?
Working together with neighbors, we can make a real difference in getting affordable housing built in Toronto and Davenport.
